Let's Learn!
Hi! I'm Lisa Key. I provide personalized, one-on-one tutoring lessons for reading, writing, and spelling. I have a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington, and I am Orton-Gillingham-trained at the Academy Associate Level, continuing to work under the mentorship of a Fellow. I am also trained in and practicing Structured Word Inquiry (SWI), which offers rich and lasting learning of the English language. Additionally, I served on the Kent School District Dyslexia Advisory Committee from 2019-2021 to advocate for dyslexia-related professional development for public school teachers. I first became passionate about dyslexia after my son was diagnosed with it in 2017. Through private tutoring, he has blossomed both in academics and with his self-esteem. My heart is in providing quality education and support to students and their families.
As an SWI tutor with experience in the Orton-Gillingham Approach, I am committed to providing high-quality, multisensory instruction where students learn the structure and history of the English language at a deep level. Students become word detectives, investigating and discovering the "why" behind words' spellings. It is incredible to witness students' lightbulb moments and the growth in their confidence and reading ability. Concepts are continually reviewed so the student achieves mastery. After an initial assessment, every session is tailored to the student and adjusted as it's needed. Sessions include games and a nurturing, supportive atmosphere.

Tutoring sessions take place in my home in Covington, Washington. The space is smoke-free and pet-free. On a case-by-case basis, students may transition to hybrid or Zoom lessons.
“I am so grateful to have Lisa in our sons' life! She was the one that first suggested we get him evaluated for dyslexia, leading to a formal diagnosis and us (including his teachers at school) better able to serve him. The biggest thing that stands out to me about Lisa is how much she cares and her commitment to “her craft” and our son. She has always struck me as having an amazing balance between professionalism and genuine kind heartedness.”

"Lisa's services were recommended to us soon after we received my son's dyslexia diagnosis. We had previously been using the Orton-Gillingham method for years with minimal success. He was struggling to gain reading fluency and also had issues with automaticity, writing and spelling. Remarkably, with Lisa's interventions he progressed from a first grade reading level to a 4th grade level in less than a year, and his writing and spelling have improved tremendously.
Lisa is one of the most prepared and professional educators I have come in contact with and her calming presence put me at ease during a time when I felt overwhelmed. Not only does she expertly deliver evidence-based instruction; she truly goes above and beyond; getting to know my son's interests and weaving those things into his lessons with games, activities and prizes that keep him engaged. We were prepared for it to take years to get him "reading for fun" but he can often be found doing just that. The results of Lisa's tutoring program have truly exceeded our expectations. We are astounded and grateful!"

"I honestly cannot say enough wonderful things about Lisa Key and Key Tutoring. Lisa is so much more than a tutor. Lisa is passionate about her students and what she does, and it shows in every single lesson she gives. She was always in my son’s corner, cheering him on when he needed confidence and encouraging him to push himself past his comfort zone so he could achieve his goals. Thanks to Lisa, my son is now reading and comprehending at grade level, and most importantly, my son is confident in his ability to be a good reader and student."

I look forward to hearing from you!
